It came as a big surprise, and obviously not only for me. Karel Brückner, who had decided to leave the Czech national team after Euro 2008 and retire from football, was nominated a few days ago as the new coach of the Austrian national team. He got a contract for one year with a clear aim: the qualification of the team for WC 2010. If he would suceed he would continue and lead the campaign of the WC as well. It is hard to imagine however that he will succeed. For me, he is/was one of the most fantastic and clever coaches I knew. But there were some problems lately, wrong decisions, during the WC in 2006, but also during Euro 2008. The Austrian national team is young and ambitious, but as far as I can remember, they were always absolutely incapable of playing successful football. Should this change with Brückner? I fear not ;D But I can understand that although 69 in the meantime, he doesn't want to retire and that he wants to continue with the game.
